Hey all you Committed Individuals!!!  Welcome to the first week of the Dropping Pounds for Hope Challenge! Justin, Shauna and Andrew here to offer advice and information on nutrition and fitness! We want everyone to meet their goals in this challenge, working towards a healthier you and helping the community in return!

Shauna Sweet Success:

Gaining 27 pounds with my daughter, I have since dropped 40 pounds since joining Samson Strength and Conditioning.  I feel better than I have EVER felt and more COMMITTED than ever as well! I attribute my sweet success to the following goals:

1.     Proper diet

2.     Bootcamps

3.     Running

4.     Strength Training

5.     Positive Attitude

I put in the last one for many reasons: With a positive attitude, you can do anything you set your heart and mind to.  Bootcamp is a tough workout, but you have to go into it with the attitude that you WILL finish it and boy will you feel awesome after!!!  Love this pic:

Everyone’s preference on exercises is going to be different, numbers 1-4 work for me but number 5 should work for EVERYONE! Stay Committed!

Justins Narly Nutrition Facts:

So, did you have breakfast this morning? I don’t know about you but I love breakfast, best meal of the day. You’ve heard it said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s all true. Not only does it give you energy to start a new day, but breakfast is linked to many health benefits, including weight control and improved performance.

Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast (as opposed to the kind containing jelly filled donuts) can help give you:

·         A more nutritionally complete diet, higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals

·         Improved concentration and performance in the classroom or the boardroom

·         More strength and endurance to engage in physical activity

·         Lower cholesterol levels

Breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers. Eating a healthy breakfast can reduce hunger throughout the day, and help you make better food choices at other meals. While you might think you will cut calories by skipping breakfast, this is not a good strategy, since you may compensate by over eating later in the day.

Make sure you are getting some lean protein with your morning meal and you have a better chance of making it to lunchtime without feeling hungry. Do not be scared to eat eggs for they contain the highest quality protein around! A 2007study that compared weight loss from people eating eggs vs bagels show those who eat eggs had much better results and no significant difference in cholesterol.

Some of you may say that you are short on time in the mornings, and I hear you! Sometimes it feels like we have to be out the door before we are even fully awake. Here are some options that are healthy and fast.

·         A veggie omelet and a piece of whole-wheat toast

·         A whole-wheat English muffin with low-fat cheese, a scrambled egg, and slice of tomato or lean ham

·         Smoothie made with fruit and low-fat yogurt, and whey protein powder

·         Salmon on 1/2 whole-grain bagel with light cream cheese

·         Oatmeal made with skim milk, raisins and nuts, with 4 ounces of orange juice

·         Plain Greek Yogurt and a piece of fresh fruit

·         Hard-boiled eggs and a banana

Andrew’s Mission to Music:

Now days you hardly ever see a runner, cyclist, or a gym without some sort of music playing; so what songs or gener of music is better than the other? Well it all depends on what you type of workout your doing. There are a few studies out there that have come to same conclusion that are bodies naturally go with the flow of the beat, as it takes are mind away from the feeling of burning or fatigue. With that in mind when you are working out you typically you want songs with beats per minute or BPM of over 90. Most rock, pop, and house (dub step) are all over 110 BPM.
Although most rock songs have irregular beats that can be good for runners or cyclist who want to change up pace, if you’re looking to keep that same up tempo pace maybe rock isn’t the way to go. Pop songs have the most regular beats to them. So if you’re looking to keep an up tempo pace as you run that 5k you may want to get the new Carly Rae Jepsen “Call Me Maybe” my new favorite.  House music is the new trend this summer with many songs coming out with “Dub step” remix’s, which can go up 190 BPM. If you need that extra push for the last little bit of that cardio day put on some dub step and see if it can give you that boost!
