Andrews App Crazy!

Hope everyone is enjoying their week so far. As we head forward this week try some of these amazing app, since all of us can't have a pocket Lou or Shauna to take everywhere with us to get on us when were eating bad or doing a at home workout routine wrong. Most of these apps are compatible on both android and iphone app stores.

1. MyFitnessPal: Free

One of my most used apps. This app is AMAZING! Especially for all you calorie counters out there. Put in your weight then your desired weight it tells, you the amount of calories/Carbs/Protiens need to hit your goal weight. It allows you to keep a food journal, which it then uses to tell you if you are over or under your goal. You can also add in workouts and the app will subtract those calories and give you chart of days, weeks, or months.

2. Endomondo 3.99/Free

The perfect app for any active person, you can choose over 50 different activities, and it will track your progress. You can see on the home screen: duration , distance, pace, and calories burned. After every workout you can share results to Facebook or just the Endomondo community. In the pro version it also shows a map of your run and you can also do interval training you can pick between a few settings, to what best fits you.

3. Fooducate: Free

A great app for anyone who wants to eat clean but isn't sure what the benefits of certain food items are. You can use the bar code scanner to quickly find items. When you look up any item it gives you 5 quick facts and 5 alternatives items. If you can’t bar code scan, they allow you to just type it in. It saves past results.

Hope you guys try some of these neat apps out. Keep up the hard work. Don't forget to keep hydrated as it gets hotter you will be losing a lot more fluids.

Justins Heatin’ Things UP!

Well gang, June 21st marked the first day of Summer and July 4th is this week! That means we are in the prime season for grilling. The air is filled this time of year with the smell of all sorts of tempting things simmering over an open flame.  There is more to grilling than just hamburgers and hot dogs and I am here to give you some alternatives that are healthy and delicious.

I haven’t had a hot dog since 1997. Don’t even get me started on what they are made of! Burgers on the other hand are fine as long as you make sure the meat is as lean as possible. For example, Publix has a green label on their ground chuck or patties that is the leanest and lowest fat option they offer.  Avoid the Bubba Burger types that are pre-made, frozen, and come in a box. Read the nutrition labels on those things and see what I mean.

I am fond of turkey burgers myself. Turkey is a great source of lean protein and is lower in fat than beef. A recipe I learned was to buy the ground turkey meat, throw in a whipped egg or two, and lastly add the pre-diced medley of peppers, tomato, and onions.  Mix all this in a bowl and make into patties. The egg serves to hold it together since turkey can fall apart easier than beef. The taste is delicious and the texture is just like beef. You can also try Bison if you can find it. It is delicious and most people can’t tell the difference between it and beef. Bison has much less cholesterol and fat but all of the protein. It’s not cheap though.

Another option is to grill some kabobs using whatever lean meats and vegetables you prefer. I use chicken, onions, and red bell peppers or zucchini.  Just cut the chicken and veggies into smaller pieces, skewer, and grill. Just be sure to keep the heat from being too high! Season with something like Mrs. Dash or Sea Salt and Pepper.

Shauna’s Minute on Multivitamins!

Do you take a multivitamin everday?? If your answer is no, then let’s turn that no into a YES! Multivitamins are important for many reasons:

  • To prevent diseases
  • To get the Recommended Daily Allowance of nutrients
  • Nutrient deficiencies in food
  • Consistent nutrient intake
  • To maintain cellular efficiency
  • The activation of enzymes essential to cellular function

It would be ideal if everyone could eat at least 5 to 7 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day, which is generally recommended by nutritionists in order to get the optimal daily nutrient intake. However, as mentioned above, modern day food practices account for measurable losses of necessary nutrients.

Shay, Sean and I were at the mall about a month ago and popped into Vitamin World.  We were there to buy protein but I went over to the vitamin section and saw Ultra Woman-Sport-Vitamins.  This particular vitamin is targeted for active women and there is also a Ultra Men-Sport as well which Sean bought.  I have been taking these vitamins, two a day and really do feel a difference.  I feel more energized and focused and because I probably don’t get all the daily recommended vitamins and minerals from foods everyday, now I do!

Eating right by making healthy food choices is always best, yet it is not always practical for everyone. Many of us have busy lives that do not leave time for proper meal planning and preparation, which can help insure that our families and ourselves are getting the daily nutrients to prevent disease. Therefore, including a high quality multivitamin and mineral formula into our daily regimen.  You can find vitamins anywhere-Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Vitamin World and Nutrition Smart.  Take the time to look at the different products out there as you will find one that fits your needs.
